US, Israel defense ministers discuss anti-Iran alliance "ConflictWatch Feed Israel"

The Cradle | June 16, 2023

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant met with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on 15 June at the NATO summit in Brussels to discuss Iran and other important aspects of the US-Israel relationship, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Gallant discussed with Austin his claims that Iran stimulates attacks against Israel using proxies in Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank, and reiterated Israels right to self-defense, the Israeli paper said.

Before departing for Belgium, Gallant said he would discuss with Austin the implementation of the joint commitment of both our countries to make sure Iran will never possess nuclear military capabilities.

Israeli threats against Iran have intensified in recent months amid unconfirmed reports that Washington is close to reaching an interim or partial nuclear deal with Tehran through indirect talks in Oman.

Israel opposes a US nuclear deal with Iran, while Iranian officials have made clear they will only accept a full return to the nuclear deal signed with the Obama administration in 2015. The Trump administration withdrew from the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), unilaterally in 2018. The JCPOA placed limits on Irans nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Despite US negotiations with Iran, the US military has expanded military cooperation with Israel this year and carried out exercises viewed as veiled threats against Iran, such as the Juniper Oak exercise in January.

The exercise involved 7,900 personnel, 142 combat aircraft, twelve warships, and activities across all domains (sea, air, land, space, and cyber). The main goals of the exercise were to improve interoperability and to demonstrate the ability to surge forces into the region in the event of war with Iran.

Reports emerged that the exercise simulated strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, though US officials denied this.

In March, Austin met with Gallant in Israel. At the time, Austin said that although the Biden administration continues to believe in diplomacy, it would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

Despite ongoing political differences between the Biden administration and the Israeli government regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus proposed l...

Israel: Palestinians arent ignoring the protest movement - theyre shut out

Protest leaders are stopping discussion of the occupation and Palestinian issues to make the demonstrations more 'mainstream'

Over 23 weeks of anti-government protests, Israel has been cast into a period of introspection, with Israelis grappling over what kind of country their home is becoming.

Jewish Israelis, that is. Conspicuously absent are Palestinian citizens of Israel, as well as any mention of the occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

Left-wing Israelis often refer to the 55-year-long occupation as the elephant in the room, due to peoples unwillingness to address an issue that asks awkward questions of Israel.

Perhaps at no time has this been more prevalent than the protest movement, which arose out of opposition to the Israeli governments controversial judicial reforms.

Further alienating Palestinian citizens from the protests is the lack of reference to the wave of murders in their communities.

In Photos: A Cancer Patient Pitches Tent in Front of Red Cross Office in Gaza "ConflictWatch Feed Palestine"

Al-Jirjawi told the Palestine Chronicle that his goal is to send a message that everyone should have the right to free movement, especially cancer patients.

Iyad al-Jirjawi is a 37-year-old former Palestinian prisoner and cancer patient who now lives in the besieged Gaza Strip.

A few days ago, he decided to set up a tent in front of the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza City. Then he launched an open hunger strike to protest the Israeli decision to prevent him from traveling abroad and receiving proper treatment.

Al-Jirjawi told the Palestine Chronicle that his goal is to send a message that everyone should have the right to free movement, especially cancer patients.

The former prisoner also revealed that he had suffered medical negligence inside Israeli prisons. Now that he is free and living in besieged Gaza, his suffering has carried on.

I was released from (Israeli) occupation prisons in 2020, after 9 years, of imprisonment, Al-Jirjawi told The Palestine Chronicle.

After a long struggle, I was able to travel to Jordan to receive the necessary treatment for cancer, and I stayed there for four months.

After consulting with his doctors, Al-Jirjawi decided to return to the Gaza Strip to see his family.

I had not seen my family since my release, which happened when the coronavirus pandemic restrictions were still in place, he told us.

After a short period after his return to Gaza, Al-Jirjawi tried to leave the Strip to receive treatment. He paid $200 to obtain the necessary papers, but he was sent back by the Egyptian authorities at the Rafah crossing. He was not given any reason.

He tried a second time. This time he was asked to pay $500 dollars, an exorbitant amount of money in impoverished Gaza. Still, he was denied entry.

Having no other option, the man is now camping in front of the Red Cross office, hoping that someone could hear his pleas.

Al-Jirjawi was born in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and now lives in the city of Khan Yunis.

He was arrested by the Israeli authorities in 2011 at a military checkpoint. At the time he was returning home, via Israel, where he was receiving cancer treatment.

Doctors at Elmhurst Hospital Hit the Picket Line and Win Contract "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Medical residents at the city-run Elmhurst Hospital in Queens won a significant raise with a three-day strike in late May, and now residents at Mount Sinai Health Systems Morningside and West hospitals on the Upper West Side have warned they might walk out on similar issues.

The around 165 residents at Elmhurst, employed by Mount Sinais Icahn School of Medicine, reached a tentative contract agreement that would give them an 18% raise over three years. That more or less brings them to parity with nonunion residents at Mount Sinais flagship hospital on the Upper East Side, according to their union, the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) SEIU.

The strike was the first by residents in the city since 1990. Residents at Flushing and Jamaica hospitals in Queens, both managed by the nonprofit MediSys network, won new contracts in May just before their strike deadlines.

On June 2, the about 500 residents at Morningside and West hospitals gave management the 10-day advance notice legally required for health-care strikes, setting a deadline of 7 a.m. on June 13. They too are seeking parity with Mount Sinais nonunion residents.

Doctors based at those two hospitals have a second-class residency when it comes to salary and benefits, says Dr. Brian Brown, an emergency-room resident at both Morningside and West. For residents at the same employer to make thousands of dollars more for the same work in a different zip code across Central Park is not fair. He says hes often worked in the same unit as residents from Mount Sinai Hospital.

Three out of four U.S. doctors now work for corporations, and they are increasingly seeking the protection that comes with being in a union.

Mount Sinai management said in a statement June 5 that it had offered CIR a salary package equal to those the union has accepted at other New York City hospitals on May 31. However, we are prepared for any potential staffing changes to ensure patients and families receive the highest quality care under all circumstances.

We have not seen a lot of meaningful progress, Dr. Brown told The Indypendent June 2.

Residents are doctors doing postgraduate work after completing their one-year internship. The programs typically last for three years, and longer for specialties such as neurosurgery, says CIR communications director Sunyata Altenor. They do much of the work at hospitals, putting in 80 hours per week on average down from 100 hours three or four decades ago, she adds and are there before and after the attending physicians, and often do out-of-title work such as drawing blood.

Other issues for the Morningside and West residents include hazard pay, retroactive pay their contract expired Nov. 30, in the midst of the Omicron variant of COVID-19s surge and fertility-preservation benefits. Thats important, Br...

Gaza: Amnesty calls on ICC to investigate Israel for war crimes

Rights group says Israeli strikes on Gaza last month could amount to 'crimes against humanity'

Amnesty International has accused Israel of "collective punishment against the civilian population" during last month's fighting between Israel and Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip, and called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate.

The new report concluded that Israel conducted "apparently disproportionate" strikes against men, women and children in Gaza over a five-day period in May, killing 33 Palestinians, including six children.

One Israeli was also killed during the fighting.

During the attacks, the Israeli military damaged 2,943 housing units, including 103 homes which were completely destroyed. More than 1,244 Palestinians have also been displaced.

"Since the root cause of these recurrent unlawful attacks against civilians is Israel's apartheid system against Palestinians, therefore Amnesty International is renewing its call on the ICC to consider the applicability of the crime against humanity of apartheid within its current formal investigation into the Situation in the State of Palestine," said the report.
