Recycling Plastic in Gaza as a Means of Survival (PHOTOS) "ConflictWatch Feed Palestine"

Many children in Gaza work full-time doing this kind of job. They tell us that it is exhausting, has no future, and is hardly rewarding.

Akram al-Hadaf is an 18-year-old teenager from the town of Beit Lahiya, in the northern Gaza Strip.

Like many in his generation, he had to join the workforce to support his family.

Thanks to Israels hermetic siege on Gaza, the small region has one of the highest rates of unemployment and poverty in the world.

Akrams job is to collect and sell plastic to those who are able to recycle them for possible reuse.

He wakes up very early in the morning and spends most of the day visiting Gazas many dumping grounds, looking for plastic, which he sells at the end of each day.

Akram told the Palestine Chronicle that his daily income averages about 15 shekels a day (about $4).

Many children in Gaza work full-time doing this kind of job. They tell us that it is exhausting, has no future, and is hardly rewarding.

However, it is enough, they say, to put food on the table.

Gazas poverty has historically been linked to the Israeli occupation.

The last twenty years, however, have been particularly difficult, as Israel has imposed a very tight siege on Gaza.

That, and the repeated Israeli wars, have made life in Gaza very difficult, if at all bearable.

Akram and his friends, however, have no other option but to do whatever they can to ensure the very survival of their families.

Israeli illegal settler faces 'terrorism' charges over West Bank mosque vandalism "IndyWatch Feed World"

Israelis are rarely punished for crimes committed against Palestinians, particularly in the occupied West Bank. Israeli prosecutors have filed charges related to "terrorism" against a Jewish settler accused of vandalising a mosque as part of anti-Palestinian rampages in the occupied West Bank last month, which drew a rare demand from the United States for accountability. The spree of vandalism and arson by hundreds of settlers in several villages and towns followed the June 20 killing of four Israelis by Hamas gunmen, which in turn was a response to a deadly Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp that killed seven Palestinians and wounded more than 90 others. At least one man was killed in the village of Turmus Ayya. Many of the Palestinians who lost property in the subsequent settler rampage were US dual nationals.

PNG By-elections : Issue of Writs deferred due to Security arrangements "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The date for the issue of writ for the three By-Elections has been deferred to Thursday 27th of July.

PNG Electoral Commissioner, Simon Sinai announced this yesterday (Wednesday 12.07.23), saying this is to allow police to sort out security arrangements.

He said security is an important component of any election operation and the Commission will give time for police to prepare themselves well.

By-Elections will be conducted for the three affected electorates - North Bougainville in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Wewak in East Sepik Province and Lagaip in Enga Province.

The Electoral Commissioner said the Commission will wait for police to sort out their budget and other operational requirements within the next few days before the issue of writ next Thursday.

Mr. Sinai said police will go to the respective electorates and carry out security assessments on the ground and advice the Commission accordingly.

He said the writ will be issued on Thursday July, 27th, 2023, and nominations will open for seven days and closes on the 2nd of August, 2023.

Mr. Sinai said the campaign period will run for 8 weeks and polling will commence on September 23rd and closes on the 2nd of October 2023.

Counting will be conducted within 21 days from October 6th to the 27th and return of writ will be on or before October 27th, 2023.

By-Elections will be conducted for the electorates of North Bougainville, Wewak and Lagaip.

The seat of North Bougainville was left vacant after the incumbent MP, William Nakin passed away prior to counting of votes for the electorate following the 2022 National Elections.

For Wewak Open electorate, the incumbent MP, Kevin Isifu passed away after suffering from an illness, while the Lagaip electorate was declared failed after ballot boxes and papers were burnt and destroyed.
