Nothing but Sympathy for the Palestinians: Sinad OConnor Dies at Age 56 Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

OConnor, who was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, was also known for her outspoken political activism.

Irish icon Sinad OConnor died on Wednesday, July 26, at the age of 56.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinad, the singers family said in a statement.

Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.

Sympathy for the Palestinians

OConnor, who was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, was also known for her outspoken political activism.

In September 2014, only a few months after a bloody Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the Grammy award-winner canceled a concert in Caesarea, a town located halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Speaking with Hot Press at the time to explain her stance, OConnor said:

Nobody with any sanity, including myself, would have anything but sympathy for the Palestinian plight.

Theres not a sane person on earth who in any way sanctions what the f**k the Israeli authorities are doing, she added.

US and Israel: Is the Unbreakable Bond Finally Breaking? Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

Though much of Israels self-proclaimed independence was an outcome of unconditional US support, Israelis hardly acknowledge this fact.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog added nothing of great value in his speech at the United States Congress on July 19.

His was the typical language. He spoke of a sacred bond, touted the shared experience between both nations as unique in scope and quality, and celebrated the great, common values that reach across generations.

But this theatrical language was meant to hide an uncomfortable truth: the relationship between Israel and the US is changing at a fundamental level.

Two days before Herzogs speech, Israels opposition leader and former prime minister, Yair Lapid, declared that the United States is no longer (Israels) closest ally.

Lapids words were a mix of facts and political opportunism.

Lapid and others in his camp are keen on blaming Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for the waning relationship between both countries; or to use more pertinent language, for weakening the sacred, unbreakable bond, which has for many years joined the two countries together.

Lapids assessment, however, is imprecise. While it is true that Netanyahu played a role in widening the distance between Tel Aviv and Washington, that distance was growing based on other dynamics a mixture of political, geopolitical, and demographic changes and trends.

But whose assessment is closer to the truth? Herzogs claim of a sacred bond or Lapids more dramatic assertion of a faltering alliance?

To address this question, we must look beyond the exaggerated public statements made by officials from both countries and particularly from the leaders of the US two powerful parties, the Republicans and the Democrats.

In terms of language, the leaderships of both parties insist that Washingtons devotion to Israel is beyond politics and that Israels security is above Americas own political polarization.

In a speech at the Israeli Knesset (parliament) on May 1, US House speaker Kevin McCarthy...

Israels Largest Surface Cultural Heist: Palestinian Cuisine Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

The Zionist movement envisioned Israels survival as being predicated on erasing the history of the rich heritage of Palestines culture and its people.

In continuation of my previous article exploring the Israeli invention of national symbols and landmarks, this piece delves further into the appropriation of Palestinian surface culture by Israel.

Surface culture encompasses tangible and observable elements that contribute to the distinctive identity of a cultural group or region. Music, food, dress, and other aspects often define a nations surface culture. For instance, Scotland is recognized by mens kilts, Salsa music represents Latin American culture, and Japan is known for its Sushi cuisine.

Authentic culture evolves organically over generations. However, Israels top-down approach to culture lacks genuine identifying characteristics. Throughout its history, Israel has either fabricated, annexed, or reconstructed both surface and deep cultural elements through falsehoods, myths, and fables. Unlike the conventional development of cultures, Israeli surface culture came prepackagedAmerican fast-food styleby appropriating those very elements from the age-old traditional Palestinian culture.

A prominent aspect of any societys surface culture is its local cuisine. In 1948, Israel ethnically cleansed Palestine of the non-Jewish Palestinians, took over their land, and brazenly claimed Palestinian culinary treasures like hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj, tabouli salad, couscous (maftool), freekeh, kubbeh, mujadara, pita bread, and many more. All it took was to identify a Palestinian dish and then add the noun Israeli before its name.

Enumerating the complete list of plagiarized Palestinian cuisine is too long to be explored in greater detail, especially as Western familiarity with Palestinian culinary remains limited. Thus, this article will expose Israels largest surface culture heist in history by focusing on two internationally renowned dishes: hummus and falafel.

Lets begin by exploring the word hummus to understand its origin and meaning in the Arabic language. In Arabic, hummus literally translates to chickpeas or garbanzo beans and does not mean mash, dip, or paste. The word hummus is used as an abbreviation of the full Arabic term that refers to the famous dish hummus bitatahini. This means mashed chickpea...

Miko Peled: Israel Was Never a Cohesive Democracy, and Its Disintegration Was Inevitable "ConflictWatch Feed Israel"

Israel is a nation grappling with deep internal divisions, and unfortunately, it is the Palestinian people who are paying the heavy price. Recently, a group of Israeli reservists known as Brothers In Arms made headlines by refusing to fulfill their reserve duty in protest of the newly passed Judicial Reform. Their stated concern was for the preservation of Jewish democracy, with an emphasis on creating a better future for their children within such a system.

Some of the refusers who sat with their backs to the cameras, probably because they were members in some of Israels highly secretive death squads, known as the Special Forces, said they were concerned about the nature of the Israeli army. But what was it that they did not mention? Even once? The rights of Palestinians.

Fundraiser

The rights and welfare of the Palestinian people seemed to hold no significance for these individuals. Despite being hailed by some as heroic champions of democracy, they displayed a disheartening indifference toward the safety and well-being of Palestinian children. To them, millions of Palestinians are merely viewed as targets, devoid of any value beyond the crosshairs of a gun.

The media is portraying the protest in Israel as the growing pains of a young democracy. It is not. Israel was never a democracy but a racist, violent, divided entity that has barely kept it together. Furthermore, Israel was never a cohesive society, and this break was inevitable.

Now Israel is falling apart in front of our very eyes, Palestinians are undergoing unprecedented suffering, and there is no one presenting a clear agenda for Palestine. Once again, at historic intersections in Palestine, the people of Palestine have no say because they have no voice.

Not the First Time

Israeli society is a patchwork of immigrant groups who are mostly disconnected from each other and make up the socio-economic structure of Israeli society. Generally speaking, the more European you are, the more privilege you have. This is definitely not the first crisis that Israeli society has had to endure, but it is the first one where the President of the United States and other notable Americans seem concerned.

When the state of Israel was established, Zionist institutions did everything they could to get Jewish communities in Arab countries to leave their homeland and their homes and to come to what was now Israel. Even though, for the most part, these ancient Jewish communities were reluctant to move, many of them did. They came from Yemen, all over North Africa, from Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and they came from Kur...

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man during a military raid in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

Mohammad Abdel-Hakim Nada, 23, was shot in the chest by Israeli gunfire and later died in hospital, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Israeli troops raided the Al-Ain refugee camp in Nablus in the late morning to arrest some Palestinians, local media said.

Armed clashes erupted after an undercover unit of Israeli soldiers was discovered in the camp.

It was not immediately clear if Nada died in clashes or as a bystander.

Legislation to remove key judicial oversight of parliament has provoked widespread protests across Israel

Despite several months of protests across Israel, on Monday parliamentarians succeeded in passing legislation to remove a key judicial power, limiting the ability of the courts to override the government's laws.

The so-called "reasonableness standard" had long been a thorn in the side of right-wingers in Israel and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed its removal as a victory for parliament over an unelected body.

Today we did a necessary democratic act, an act that is intended to return a measure of balance between the branches of government, Netanyahu said in a televised address on Monday evening.

For anti-government demonstrators and opposition leader Yair Lapid, the move instead signals the "destruction of Israeli democracy".

With international markets reacting negatively to the move and condemnation coming from foreign governments, Middle East Eye takes a look at why the "reasonableness standard" was such a point of contention.

Its Past Time to be Honest About Israel "ConflictWatch Feed Israel"

The deliberate corruption of American politics by an irresponsible foreign state must end

BY PHILIP GIRALDI UNZ REVIEW JULY 25, 2023

One might think that since Honest Joe Biden declared his latest war entitled the US National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism in May the media has certainly taken up the task of exposing evil in these United States by reporting every affront to Jewish groups or individuals and to the Jewish state, Israel. The purpose is to invent a narrative suggesting that the worlds richest and most powerful ethno-religious demographic is somehow a perpetual victim and that goes double for Israel, explaining and forgiving the apartheid states occupying armys targeting and killing of 55 journalists and its murder of more than 150 Palestinian civilians so far this year, including the sniper shooting of a Palestinian two-year-old boy in the head. In spite of all that carnage, a wealthy Israel, which can afford to provide free health care and university education to its citizens, continues to receive nearly $4 billion in military aid plus billions more in trade and charitable benefits from the United States taxpayer annually, totaling more than $300 billion since the Jewish state was founded in 1948.

We have lately been treated to a massive propaganda campaign orchestrated by the likes of the notorious American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Anti-Defamation Leagues (ADL) hideous leader Jonathan Greenblatt. One wonders why organizations like that which work closely with the Israeli government are not required to register with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), but to question that relationship got John F. Kennedy killed, so it is probably best to look the other way.

The role of organizations like ADL and AIPAC, dedicated to spreading lies about the Middle East and the world in general, is in part to convince the American public that Israel is really a wonderful place that is threatened by the Arab terrorists, as they choose to put it for obvious reasons. This grants Israel blanket immunity whenever its government exercises the right to defend itself doing whatever it takes, including blowing up schools and hospitals and attacking its neighbors. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that his government would not tolerate any attempt to change the historical status quo of Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem during a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ankara.

"As Turkiye, we continue to support the Palestinian cause in the strongest way possible. We are deeply concerned about the violence of illegal settlers," Erdogan said during a joint press conference.

"We cannot tolerate any acts attempting to change the historical status quo of holy places, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The unity and reconciliation of the Palestinians are key elements in this process," he added.

In April, Israeli troops stormed Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque. The move prompted condemnation from the Arab and Muslim world. Erdogan said Israel had crossed a "red line".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also set to visit Turkey this week, but the trip was postponed after Netanyahu's health deteriorated and he had a pacemaker installed.

Major Victory for BDS as American Anthropological Association Endorsees Boycott of Israel Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

The American Anthropological Association (AAA) voted to endorse a boycott of Israeli academic institutions and sever ties with Israeli universities over their role in discriminating against Palestinians.

The vote is considered a major victory for the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

AAA president Ramona Perez described the vote as controversial, but said the decision was collective.

The vote, which was held via electronic ballot between June 15 and July 14, resulted in a landslide victory in favor of the boycott, with 71% voting yes and 29% no.

The association, which was founded in 1902 and includes scholars specializing in cultural, biological, linguistic, medical and applied anthropologists.

Below is the full statement by the AAA following the vote.

Thirty-seven percent of AAAs eligible members voted, with 2,016 members (71% of the votes) supporting the resolution, and 835 members (29% of the votes) voting to oppose it.

This was indeed a contentious issue, and our differences may have sparked fierce debate, but we have made a collective decision and it is now our duty to forge ahead, united in our commitment to advancing scholarly knowledge, finding solutions to human and social problems, and serving as a guardian of human rights, said AAA President Ramona Prez. AAAs referendum policies and procedures have been followed closely and without exception, and the outcome will carry the full weight of authorization by AAAs membership.

Its over. Six months into the judicial reform - regime change, as the opposition labels it - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has chosen his coalition over his country.

In the absence of opposing MPs, who walked out before the vote, a key part of the incendiary judicial overhaul was approved by parliament on Monday - the reasonableness standard.

I See You at the Graveyard: Gaza Horror Stories You Are Now Allowed to Know Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

According to the Gaza Ministry of Social Development, 459 families were displaced as a result of the Israeli war. They are now homeless, totaling 2,516 people, including 1,180 children.

On May 9, Israel attacked Gaza with ferocity. For five days, it bombed the besieged Strip, killing 33 Palestinians and wounding hundreds more. Much of that horror, however, was not shown on television.

On May 13, 2023, the Nabhan family received a phone call from the Israeli army, warning them of an imminent bombing of their residence, located in the neighborhood of Jabalia, in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Falestine and Belal Nabhan are both 35. They have four children with special needs. That harrowing call terrorized them.

We were having dinner when the Israeli army called us and ordered us to evacuate our house in ten minutes, Falestine told The Palestine Chronicle.

Gripped by fear, I hastily dressed myself on the staircase. I also forgot to wear my hijab, Falestine continued.

Her husband Belal told us that his first thoughts were focused only on the children.

We only had ten minutes to leave our house, he said. Even for a healthy person this is hardly enough, imagine for a person with disabilities.

I was not even able to take their medications and wheelchairs with me, Belal said, with the sadness of that moment still lingering.

The Nabhan familys house, once filled with cherished memories, now lies in ruins. The family is now homeless.

Where can we seek refuge? My disabled children did not deserve such a fate, Falestine told us, in tears.

A Pompei in Gaza: Major Archeological Discovery Announced Articles Archives - Palestine Chronicle

Archaeologists working on a 2,000-year-old Roman cemetery discovered in Gaza last year have found at least 125 tombs, most with skeletons still largely intact, and two rare lead sarcophaguses, Reuters news agency reported.

It is the first time in Palestine we have discovered a cemetery that has 125 tombs, and it is the first time in Gaza we have discovered two sarcophaguses made of lead, Fadel Al-Autul, an expert at the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, told Reuters.

Autul, whose organization supervises the work with help from the French aid agency, Premiere Urgance International, also said that one of the two sarcophaguses was decorated with images of grapes and the other with dolphins.

We need funds to preserve this archaeological site so that history does not get washed away, he added.

Autul said he hoped the site would become a tourist destination, with a museum to display the findings.

At least 25 engineers and technicians were engaged on Sunday, despite the soaring heat, in digging, clearing the dirt, and preserving the skeletons. They have also been piecing together clay jars found inside some of the graves.

Its all about ethics in war "ConflictWatch Feed Israel"

I guess we arent supposed to worry. Judeo-Christian roots will ensure U.S. military AI is used ethically, general says.

A three-star Air Force general said the U.S. militarys approach to artificial intelligence is more ethical than adversaries because it is a Judeo-Christian society, an assessment that drew scrutiny from experts who say people from a wide range of religious and ethical traditions can work to resolve the dilemmas AI poses.

Lt. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr. made the comment at a Hudson Institute event Thursday while answering a question about how the Pentagon views autonomous warfare. The Department of Defense has been discussing AI ethics at its highest levels, said Moore, who is the Air Forces deputy chief of staff for plans and programs.

Regardless of what your beliefs are, our society is a Judeo-Christian society, and we have a moral compass. Not everybody does, Moore said. And there are those that are willing to go for the ends regardless of what means have to be employed.

Fills me with confidence, that does. After all, we have a long history of devout Christian soldiers always being ethical.

Hey, the Nazis were part of a Christian society, you know.

Israel was hit by a political earthquake on Monday as MPs passed a law limiting the Supreme Court's power, one of a raft of judicial reforms critics say are turning the country into an autocracy.

Ahead of the vote and after, thousands of protesters in Jerusalem blocked the roads leading to Israel's parliament, the Knesset, with police using water cannons to remove them. Thousands more gathered in Tel Aviv, with protests expected throughout the night.

MP passed the bill by 64 votes to zero, after opposition lawmakers left the parliament in protest when compromise talks broke down.

The new law abolishes Israel's "reasonableness standard", eliminating the Supreme Court's ability to block government decisions it deems unreasonable.

CAMERA Arabic prompts two BBC Arabic corrections "ConflictWatch Feed Israel"

(All translations, emphases and in-bracket remarks are by CAMERA Arabic)

CAMERA Arabic recently prompted the BBC to correct factual errors which appeared in two BBC Arabic items purporting to provide context to the IDF counter-terrorism operation in Jenin earlier this month.

In a July 3rd item about the Jenin refugee camp, BBC Arabic stated:

Like the rest of the Palestinian territories, the [Jenin refugee] camp has witnessed many armed conflicts during the two Palestinian Intifadas, the first in 1987 and the second in 2002.

Perhaps the most outstanding event which the camp has witnessed is the Israeli forces siege on it in April 2002

In fact, the second Intifada broke out in September 2000, over a year and a half before the IDF went into Jenin. CAMERA Arabic prompted the BBC to correct that date the day after the items publication (before/after).

Secondly, in a July 6th backgrounder about the conflict from a broader perspective, BBC Arabic wrote:
